In the days leading up to our Spring Artisans Showcase and Power of Play Fundraiser (April 26, 2013 6-9 pm at the Fergus Legion) we wanted to take a few minutes each day and recognize some of the amazing artisans and vendors who will be at our showcase!

Today we are featuring RangerHanna (Fergus)

Hi my name is Christine and I am a craftaholic. I have been an avid crafter for many years. It started with scrapbooking/sewing and has ventured out in many directions. Specializing in custom coasters, fabric and paper creations is what I do and I'm happy to be able to share it with all of you.

Coasters

My little venture with coasters started when we need a teacher's gift for our sons teacher. We wanted to give her something "different". Personalizing a set of coasters made for a great gift. Excited with the outcome I posted a picture on facebook and have been making them ever since for 4 years now
*personalized coasters aways available for order!!

Hair Accessories

I make a variety of different headbands, clips and hair ties. Headbands include braided, fabric and my signature fabric flower on a soft or hard headband.
Looking forward to seeing everyone on April 26. Stop by my table and say hello. There you will find over 200+ coasters and an abundance of hair accessories

Spring Showcase Artist Feature: Word Jumble Photography

In the days leading up to our Spring Artisans Showcase and Power of Play Fundraiser (April 26, 2013 6-9 pm at the Fergus Legion) we wanted to take a few minutes each day and recognize some of the amazing artisans and vendors who will be at our showcase!

Today we are featuring Word Jumble Photography (Guelph)

Word Jumble Photography was created by Laura Bauer when she moved to Guelph after leaving Toronto.

With no previous thoughts of photography as a hobby, she took her little point and shoot camera on walks around the city, and started taking pictures of the beautiful houses and other architecture in the city. After driving in urrounding areas, she also realized that there was a lot of beautiful buildings in some of the small towns in the region. Using pictures that come from Guelph and surrounding areas (including some from Fergus), Word Jumble Photography was born.

It took a while to train herself to ‘see’ the letters. She had to learn to see the detail in the bigger picture, since some of the best letters are hidden in larger features. After almost getting into accidents from slamming on the brakes because she saw the perfect letter on a house and needed to stop and take it, or walking across the street to get a new photo without paying attention and twisting her ankle on the curb, shethinks its time for therapy - 800 letters is probably enough - maybe. With so many photos on her website makes it possible to customize any word or name in various of media - stone, brick, metal, glass and so on.

Many of the words created are inspirational, many are romantic, and many are names, first or last, that people have commissioned for weddings, christenings, or baby nurseries.

When starting to put a word together, she looks at her list of photos for that letter, and starts to get a feel of how she wants that word to look like– does she want all iron pictures, or stone, or a mix? Does she want pictures with lots of detail, or more simple letters? It’s very much how she feels at the time. Sometimes, she will change it midway because one letter doesn’t look as good as it should. She knows the piece is done when there is a sense of balance – no one letter stands out from the others, but each letter is its own picture in its own right.

She gets a great sense of fulfillment when she points out a letter to someone, tells them where it comes from, and a look of recognition crosses their faces. Even with more than 800 photos, she know where every picture was taken.

Word Jumble Photography's items come in many price points - from a greeting card that can be framed, smaller table frames, to mid to larger size framed pieces.
The company continues to grow and is featured in several galleries and gift boutiques in places such as Richmond Hill, Guelph and Mount Forest.

The second part of Word Jumble Photography is Catty Cards - animal with attitude. Funny greeting cards that feature Laura and her friend's pets with witty and humorous sayings. They are great for birthday's, mother's day, and Christmas (there is even a Hahnaka card). Other cards feature various flowers taken in the Guelph area, photos featuring religious icons - Church of Our Lady, and Marymount cemetary, and some cartoon clips that express many sentiments.
After 5 years of enjoying a hobby that started as a lark, and an investment in a real camera, Laura will continue to scour the area looking for the next perfect letter, and following her long suffering cats for the next funny photo.

Spring Showcase Artist Feature: Heads and Toes (Kitchener/Waterloo)

In the days leading up to our Spring Artisans Showcase and Power of Play Fundraiser (April 26, 2013 6-9 pm at the Fergus Legion) we wanted to take a few minutes each day and recognize some of the amazing artisans and vendors who will be at our showcase!

Today we are featuring Heads and Toes (Kitchener/Waterloo)

Heads and Toes began by two Moms who love their craft and never go anywhere without a little knitting project in our purses! Having always enjoyed creating homemade knitwear for our children and for friends and family the move to starting a home business was an exciting next step.  With encouragement from our families we decided to make more of our own original designs and began selling them at local craft sales and from our homes. We now have an Etsy store, a Facebook page and have added many fun items to our collections which can be viewed on our Facebook page.

We live in Kitchener/Waterloo and whenever possible we purchase our materials locally! We love to make our knits with soft and natural fibres such as fine merino wool, baby alpaca or llama, cashmere, cotton and bamboo. We charge a fair price for our beautiful creations and find using quality materials means they last longer and are more durable.

We are always designing new items and we get inspiration from nature, animals and what is new in fashion. We enjoy creating custom items for our customers who have something special in mind but are having trouble finding it. We love to take on a challenge and create something you can enjoy wearing. Heads and Toes have added beautiful hand sewn dresses and cotton sun hats as well as hair accessories to our collections. We are always planning and creating and enjoying where this process is taking us.

Spring Showcase Artist Feature: Bhupi Rajput - Henna 4 You

In the days leading up to our Spring Artisans Showcase and Power of Play Fundraiser (April 26, 2013 6-9 pm at the Fergus Legion) we wanted to take a few minutes each day and recognize some of the amazing artisans and vendors who will be at our showcase!

Today we are featuring Bhupi Rajput of Henna 4 You

Bhupi is an incredibly talented Mehendhi (Henna) artist who combines a rare blend of old school tradition with modern trend-setting design.

Bhupi was born in Kenya, and raised in England where she graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Product Management.  She now lives in Canada with her husband, Sanjeev & two kids.

Bhupi is a travellor.  While  living in the UK, she travelled extensively including Europe, Africa and some parts of the Far East.  She learned the art of mehendhi while backpacking through a village in India almost 16 years ago and continued to develop her art in the UK.  Her teacher was a nine–year–old girl who worked outside the hotel.  Her interest in the art of mehendi  was set aside for many years, was brought back to life and has been her good luck charm ever since.

Her backpacking adventures play a huge part in her work. From the Taj Mahal in Agra to the mountains of Simla, deserts of Rajisthan and beaches of Goa, there was always something amazing that caught her eye whether it was the architecture or hand crafted antiques, marble pillars or inlays, the beauty was all around her.  The photographs were memories of a wonderful adventure but today, they are her inspiration.

She was a minor celebrity in Britain, and has appeared on BBC’s “Heaven and Earth” television program. Her henna designs have adorned the skin of attendees to the World Economic Forum at Davos Switzerland.  She appeared on CHCV “Smith and Hayes Show” and has had newspaper  articles written about her work (or art)  in The Kitchener Waterloo Record, Cambridge Times and Hamilton Spectator.
Bhupi loves the art and the traditions that go with it, so when she got the opportunity to take her artistry a step further, it was a dream come true.

She doodles on anything and everything.  When she hosted a pottery painting party in early 2009, it was inevitable that her piece would be unique.   The teapot got star treatment with a full bridal design that took almost 3 hours to paint.  When it arrived at her door step after firing and glazing, she was surprised how magnificent it looked.

After experimenting and much deliberation, it didn’t take long before she found the perfect technique, allowing her to paint glassware and transfer her passion for henna onto other mediums.

It started with Cocktail glasses for Teachers Gifts at the end of June and this in turn spurred her to perfect the art to offer them for sale. Her inventory grows by the day.

The glassware collection includes tealight holders, candle votives, porcelain mugs, wine, cocktail & shot glasses, champagne flutes, teapots, vases, cookie jars and the best part, the paints are food and dishwasher safe.
Bhupi has a unique perspective on the world and its cultures and she has translated that into her art. You can feel the "world" influence in her designs.  Each piece is signed and dated thus bringing a unique ethnic art into peoples homes and this is something she can smile about.

For more information, you can either email her at bhupi@henna4you.com or check out the website at www.henna4you.com
