Spring Showcase Artist Feature: Word Jumble Photography

In the days leading up to our Spring Artisans Showcase and Power of Play Fundraiser (April 26, 2013 6-9 pm at the Fergus Legion) we wanted to take a few minutes each day and recognize some of the amazing artisans and vendors who will be at our showcase!

Today we are featuring Word Jumble Photography (Guelph)

Word Jumble Photography was created by Laura Bauer when she moved to Guelph after leaving Toronto.

With no previous thoughts of photography as a hobby, she took her little point and shoot camera on walks around the city, and started taking pictures of the beautiful houses and other architecture in the city. After driving in urrounding areas, she also realized that there was a lot of beautiful buildings in some of the small towns in the region. Using pictures that come from Guelph and surrounding areas (including some from Fergus), Word Jumble Photography was born.

It took a while to train herself to ‘see’ the letters. She had to learn to see the detail in the bigger picture, since some of the best letters are hidden in larger features. After almost getting into accidents from slamming on the brakes because she saw the perfect letter on a house and needed to stop and take it, or walking across the street to get a new photo without paying attention and twisting her ankle on the curb, shethinks its time for therapy - 800 letters is probably enough - maybe. With so many photos on her website makes it possible to customize any word or name in various of media - stone, brick, metal, glass and so on.

Many of the words created are inspirational, many are romantic, and many are names, first or last, that people have commissioned for weddings, christenings, or baby nurseries.

When starting to put a word together, she looks at her list of photos for that letter, and starts to get a feel of how she wants that word to look like– does she want all iron pictures, or stone, or a mix? Does she want pictures with lots of detail, or more simple letters? It’s very much how she feels at the time. Sometimes, she will change it midway because one letter doesn’t look as good as it should. She knows the piece is done when there is a sense of balance – no one letter stands out from the others, but each letter is its own picture in its own right.

She gets a great sense of fulfillment when she points out a letter to someone, tells them where it comes from, and a look of recognition crosses their faces. Even with more than 800 photos, she know where every picture was taken.

Word Jumble Photography's items come in many price points - from a greeting card that can be framed, smaller table frames, to mid to larger size framed pieces.
The company continues to grow and is featured in several galleries and gift boutiques in places such as Richmond Hill, Guelph and Mount Forest.

The second part of Word Jumble Photography is Catty Cards - animal with attitude. Funny greeting cards that feature Laura and her friend's pets with witty and humorous sayings. They are great for birthday's, mother's day, and Christmas (there is even a Hahnaka card). Other cards feature various flowers taken in the Guelph area, photos featuring religious icons - Church of Our Lady, and Marymount cemetary, and some cartoon clips that express many sentiments.
After 5 years of enjoying a hobby that started as a lark, and an investment in a real camera, Laura will continue to scour the area looking for the next perfect letter, and following her long suffering cats for the next funny photo.
